Crypta's Echoes of the Soul is a triumphant display of the Brazilian death metal quartet's virtuosic abilities. With this 41-minute, 10-track offering, Crypta solidifies themselves as one of the most exciting new acts in the genre. Led by the dynamic duo of Fernanda Lira on bass and vocals, and Luana Dametto on drums, both formerly of thrash metal legends Nervosa, Crypta is rounded out by the impressive guitar work of Tainá Bergamaschi and Jéssica di Falchi.

From the opening moments of the record, it is clear that Crypta's approach to death metal is not just about brutality and aggression, but also intricate musicianship and melodic flair. The guitar wizardry on display throughout the album provides many memorable moments of soaring leads and intricate harmonies, each one more impressive than the last.

The track "Starvation" is a prime example of this, with its lightning-fast riffing and awe-inspiring vocal performances that harken back to the glory days of Death's iconic album The Sound of Perseverance. "Dark Night of the Soul" brings a crushing heaviness to the table, with its relentless, churning riffs and irresistible headbanging moments that will leave listeners wanting more.

But it is "From the Ashes" that truly captures the quintessential Crypta sound. This incredible track, from beginning to end, is a showcase of the band's impressive range of skills, from pounding rhythms to soaring vocals to exquisite guitar work that leaves no doubt that Crypta is a force to be reckoned with in the death metal world.

Despite having missed out on the hype around the album's release two years ago, it is clear that Crypta has quickly become a missed gem for many metalheads. Their exposure on Morbid Angel's latest US tour has introduced them to a whole new audience, including myself, and their live performances are a testament to the band's ability to deliver their music with a ferocity that only enhances their already impressive sound. It is exciting to imagine what the future holds for Crypta, but one thing is for certain: they are a band to keep on your radar.
